These data were created by the Mississippi Office of Geology (MOG), Coastal Geology and Energy Division as part of yearly shoreline monitoring exercises. Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys and accompanying beach profiles are the primary products of the yearly task. These data are useful in shoreline change analysis and historical recreation of previous shorelines. GPS shorelines from National Park Service have also been added to complete some year's shorelines.

Description:
Abstract:
2002 GPS high water line (HWL) shoreline survey of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Data were gathered using backpack style GPS units while walking the high tide line.
Purpose:
The data represent consistent documented field gathered shoreline data for the Mississippi coastline. It is a valuable set of real world measurements for analysis of shoreline change and historic shoreline position..
Supplemental_Information:
Surveys carried out using Trimble Pathfinder Basic GPS units and data was differentially corrected.

Data_Quality_Information:
Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Non measurable attributes. Dates and Collector limited to actual survey notes. The Arc/Info log file was used as a guide for the date since the shoreline usually was imported into Arc/Info within a month after being collected.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Data collected in the field with backpack GPS receivers while walking the high tide line. GPS data post processed using base station data from MOG base stations in Biloxi and Jackson. Shoreline vectors were cleaned to remove hanging nodes and manually corrected to remove clusters and errant data points. Shoreline loops were also removed. Areas where survey parties met were joined by removing redundant sections or nodes. Jagged shorelines sections, a result of data errors, were simplified where possible.
Completeness_Report:
Shoreline data represent conditions during the time of the survey; surveys are complete for what we set to accomplish. Due to the difficulty, we did not survey all marsh shorelines every year. Static man-made structures such as port and seawalls were not surveyed every year. Instead, the shoreline structure was added later from a previous data set (1986) since it did not change.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Accuracy based on differential GPS standards from previous standardization research ( Hutchins, P.S. and Oivanki, S., 1994. A Comparison of shoreline measurement techniques: GPS survey, air photo interpretation, and total station survey [abs]. Journal of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences, 39(1): 48.) and from actual analysis of data used in the shoreline data sets (A Note on Global Position System (GPS) Shoreline Accuracies Gathered by the Mississippi Office of Geology, Coastal Section). These files can be downloaded from the Mississippi Office of Geology Coastal Web site.
Quantitative_Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 5
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
+/- 5 meters at 0.1 confidence level. Previous research using MOG survey equipment during several periods on the same shoreline area showed typical accuracies of 3 to 5 meters. Accuracy at specific locations may vary depending on the geomorphology of the shoreline because accuracy is dependent on shoreline slope and ease of determining the high water line. Because the HWL is constantly changing, post survey error analyses are difficult. Certain points will be beyond the average accuracy value due to poor data signals - ever changing Positional Dilution of Precision (PDOP) constraints. Please see accuracy reports before using data.

Each source file (.ssf) represents a portion of the shoreline; source files were added to file to create the overall yearly GPS shoreline. Numerous source files are contained in the final product
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
During the process of creating yearly GPS shoreline file, source files from the pertinent time periods were added. Each GPS source file (.ssf) of GPS points was post processed creating a corrected file (.cor) in MSTM projection that was subsequently grouped to create a line feature. The line feature was exported to AutoCAD (.dxf) and each was cleaned separately and checked for completeness and accuracy before being migrated to the yearly GPS shoreline file (.shp). Errors, such as jagged shorelines and closed loops were manually corrected. Jagged shorelines were a common type of error and were corrected by moving the offset node (error) to an average position between the two adjacent nodes. Closed loops were corrected by switching points (order) to maintain nearly initial geometry but fix closed loop problem. Date of collection, collection type and collector attributes were added to the yearly GPS file as descriptors of the line feature source files. An online report is available that describes some of the process steps such as manual cleaning and post-processing.
