These data were created by the Mississippi Office of Geology (MOG), Coastal Geology and Energy Division as an offshoot of yearly shoreline monitoring exercises. Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys and accompanying beach profiles are the primary products of the yearly task. These data are useful in shoreline sensativity, morphology and shoreline evolution analysis. It represents, to a large degree the data collected by the Coastal Section since 1990.

Description:
Abstract:
This data set was created by conflating multiple data sources onto the most up to date high water shoreline. The data can be used as an inventory of recent shoreline conditions.
Purpose:
The data represent consistent documented field gathered shoreline data for the Mississippi coastline. It is a valuable set of real world measurements for analysis of shoreline change, historic shoreline position, and an inventory of shoreline character.
Supplemental_Information:
HWL shoreline survey was performed using GPS data as well as aerial Digital Ortho Imagery; dates for each source are given.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Attributes depict year of shoreline survey and organization responsible
Logical_Consistency_Report:
GPS Data: collected in the field with backpack GPS receivers while walking the high tide line. GPS data post processed using base station data from MOG base stations in Biloxi and Jackson. Shoreline vectors were cleaned to remove hanging nodes and manually corrected to remove clusters and errant data points. Shoreline loops were also removed. Areas where survey parties met were joined by removing redundant sections or nodes. Jagged shorelines sections, a result of data errors, were simplified where possible. OrthoImagery was used to supplement the GPS data and complete the shoreline. This data is not as accurate as the GPS data. Ortho Image Data: shoreline digitized from aerial photo using ArcGIS. All data cleaned to insure topological correctness. Polylines were split in segments less than 100 m in length for attributing. Dangles and overshoots removed in process of line splitting. Shoreline is not continuous in all locations. Attribute data was conflated from previous sources and from data created by the Mississippi Office of Geology. Previous source data was used as is. Created data was vissually checked using map analysis and orthoimagery.
Completeness_Report:
Shoreline data represent conditions during the time of the GPS survey or aerial photography; data are complete for intended use. The entire shoreline was not completed, some minor bayous and river sections were ommitted. Lake and pond shorelines are not included. Some attributes were not processed on all shoreline segments due to lack of data.
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
Accuracy of GPS shorelies is based on differential GPS standards from previous standardization research ( Hutchins, P.S. and Oivanki, S., 1994. A Comparison of shoreline measurement techniques: GPS survey, air photo interpretation, and total station survey [abs]. Journal of the Mississippi Academy of Sciences, 39(1): 48.) and from actual analysis of data used in the shoreline data sets (A Note on Global Position System (GPS) Shoreline Accuracies Gathered by the Mississippi Office of Geology, Coastal Section). These files can be downloaded from the Mississippi Office of Geology Coastal Web site. Accuracy of Aerial Photo derived shorelines is based on the USGS National Map Accuracy Standards, and ability to recogonize the High Water Shoreline.
Quantitative_Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 5
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
GPS shoreline accuracy of +/- 5 meters at 0.1 confidence level. Previous research using MOG survey equipment during several periods on the same shoreline area showed typical accuracies of 3 to 5 meters. Accuracy at specific locations may vary depending on the geomorphology of the shoreline because accuracy is dependent on shoreline slope and ease of determining the high water line. Because the HWL is constantly changing, post survey error analyses are difficult. Certain points will be beyond the average accuracy value due to poor data signals - ever changing Positional Dilution of Precision (PDOP) constraints. Please see accuracy reports before using data.
Quantitative_Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Assessment:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 10
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Explanation:
Aerial Photography RMS error in meters for digitizing shoreline from aerial photographs. Value taken from Crowel et al., 1991, Journal of Coastal Research, v.7, n. 3, pp 839-852.

Determination of shoreline orientation, ESI catagory, and shoreline exposure. Shoreline orientation was computed in ArcMap using a calculation routine. The ESI catagory was assinged by conflating the source ESI catagory to the present shoreline by selection by location and manually entering the data to selected shoreline segments. Shoreline exposure was determined based on orthoimagery of the shorelines location with respect to water bodies.

Process_Description:
Compute shoreline retreat, and determine geolgic setting: Shoreline retreat was computed using previously digitized historic shorelines and a buffering routine in ArcMap. Geologic setting was computed using a newly created geologic map of the area and calculated sediment depths based on core data in the area and the geologic map. Geologic information was conflated using selection by location and a small buffer. Sediment depths created by overlying a tin of Holocene thickness on the shoreline.
