These data were created by the Mississippi Office of Geology (MOG), Coastal Geology and Energy Division as part of yearly shoreline monitoring excercises. Global Positioning System (GPS) surveys and accompanying beach profiles are the primary products of the yearly task. These data are useful in shoreline change analysis and historical recreation of previous shorelines.
Description:
Abstract:
Beach profiles are measured cross-sections of the beach and provide information on shoreline location and volume change through time. These beach profiles run perpendicualar to the shoreline and encompass the dry and wet portion of the beach out to about - 4ft (-1.2 m). The x, y data are provided in feet from a local benchmark or permanent marker and feet above and below sea level - roughly NGVD-29. Elevations for some benchmarks were taken from previously recorded surveys of the monuments; other temporary benchmarks were established and surveyed in by the Mississippi Office of Geology, Coastal Geology Section.
Purpose:
These sites were chosen to represent the beach change through time. Use of this data helps determine beach volume, morphology, and present location of the "mean sea level" shoreline.
Supplemental_Information:
Beach profiles were taken using a total station and are constantly being updated as surveys occur.
