Coastal Geology Section Overview
The Coastal Geology section
is actively involved in studying and monitoring coastal change along the
Mississippi Gulf Coast. As the Mississippi coast experiences rapid growth, it
is also important to understand how the human influence will effect the natural
system. Mississippi is gifted with a diverse collection of coastal habitats
ranging from un-inhabited barrier islands to highly productive coastal marsh.
Between these two pristine habitats, the highly populated mainland shoreline is
protected by one of the longest renourished beaches in the world.
Coastal landforms and the communities of plants and animals they support have
helped coastal Mississippi prosper economically and its citizens and guests
enjoy a high standard of living. The aim of the Coastal Geology section is to
help maintain the balance between development, safety, and environmental
protection to insure that the high standard of living is sustained for the
long-term.
