of our capabilities.
Coastal Geology Capabilities
- Beach Profile and Site
Survey
-
A total station is used
for measuring beach profiles and topographic mapping of specific sites. There
are over 50 profile locations across the Mississippi Gulf Coast with data
available online in each of the three coastal counties.
-
Global Positioning System (GPS)
Mapping
-
Shoreline changes on
the coast are monitored using GPS equipment. Yearly
shoreline location surveys are
available online for each of the three coastal counties
- Vibracore Collection
-
A portable vibracore
rig with lightweight aluminum tripod is maintained for collecting subsurface,
sediment cores up to 30 feet in length. A 24-foot
pontoon boat is used to mount the rig for
collection of offshore cores in water depths up to 25 feet. A complete sediment
analysis laboratory is available for core and sample grain-size analysis.
- GIS Capabilities
-
Data are stored and
analyzed in ARC/INFO on a PC workstation. Exports to ArcView allow easy access
on a desktop PC. Historical digital shoreline data from as far back as the 1850s
are available for research comparisons. Biannual video surveys of the coast
since 1989 allow detailed geomorphic and land use change analysis.
GIS base data
include USGS Digital Line Graphs (DLG's) for the entire coast, political boundaries, biological
resources distribution, land use distribution, and annual GPS shoreline data.
- Geologic and Physical Sampling and Data Collection
-
Sampling and data
collection is performed in both marine and onshore environments. Sampling techniques vary and include
shipboard and land-based applications.
